What Do Your Tires Put Up With?

What do you leave outside? What do your tires put up with?

If you store your automobiles, recreational vehicles, and trailers outside, then your tires are working overtime. Just because your trailer is parked, doesn’t mean your tires aren’t wearing out. The effects of the weather and natural elements will take their toll on your tires.

Well, you might argue that your just checked on your tires.  Tire pressure is what it should be, and the tread is at 75%. Good to go, right? Wrong! It’s common to have tire sidewalls rotting out from outside storage. Just load up that trailer with stuff, take off down the highway, and *boom* you may have a blow-out of colossal magnitude.

What can you do to stop your tires from rotting? The best solution is to park indoors all the time, or as much as possible. If you store something like a boat trailer for long periods of time, such as six months, then storing it on blocks (off the ground) is a good idea to avoid problems. When something sits and weights on tires for a a long time, you can have trouble with “flat spots”.

If you have no choice but to store a vehicle or trailer outside, make or buy canvas covers for your tires so they don’t have to “put up with so much”. The idea is to protect the tires from the sun beating down on them, drying them out, and eventually rotting them.

If you don’t want to buy tire covers, you can make them or drape some vinyl or canvas type material over the tires. Some people use plywood to create a cut-out that slips under the fender of the trailer and butts-up against the tire.
